What We Do

The families that come through the doors of the Readiness Center join a long list of parents and children looking to support one another and grow individually and collectively. Below you will find a description of the programs offered for the children and parents of the Readiness Center. For more stories check out the Honor Roll where we highlight the successes of our families, children, staff, and donors.

Pre-School
The Readiness Center offers a comprehensive pre-school program for children ages 3 to 5. The curriculum focuses on problem solving skills, letter sounds and number recognition, as well as beginning reading skills. In addition to the standard curriculum, parental involvement is a key component of the pre-school.

Parenting & Adult Education
The Readiness Center functions as a catalyst to involve parents in the education and development of their preschool children. Some programs help parents develop home management skills, such as sewing, crafts, and parenting instruction. Other classes encourage adults to learn or upgrade computer skills, help prepare them for the G.E.D. exam, and other educational opportunities.

‘City-Kids’ After-School Program
Through the ‘City-Kids’ program, the Readiness Center provides additional support to local children in a safe and nurturing environment. The program offers the opportunity for homework assistance, as well as enrichment programs focusing on reading, writing, and math.

50/50 Teen Work/Volunteer Program
This newest addition to the program offerings is for older students who have outgrown the ‘City-Kids’ program. Students spend their time assisting other children by tutoring or mentoring. They also provide support to the center itself. In return, the student is paid for 50% of the time spent at the Readiness Center. This program helps to teach the value of volunteering and the value of work.
